Today, July 21, is the Liberation Day holiday on Guam, which celebrates the liberation of the island from the occupying Japanese troops in 1944. The day is traditionally celebrated with a huge parade in the morning and a large fireworks display in the evening. In addition there is a carnival and several other celebratory events held by the military, businesses and other groups. Of course a lot of barbecue and liquid refreshment is consumed. This year, for the second time, PIU had an entry in the parade. We were group number 50 which put us right in the middle of the parade. Joyce and I took a lot of pictures so I will break them up into several posts. I’ll start here with some pictures of the military and other walking groups and follow that up with some of the more elaborate floats….
I am not sure where else in the world you would see two dogs riding a caribao in a parade. This truck settles the controversy. It is not Texas – Talofofo is God’s country!
Before the parade started the dignitaries’ motorcade went by on its way to the grandstand
The clean-up/recycling crew came by and then the Harleys made sure everyone was awake
The Guard and the Marines followed
There were several flyovers too. Really there is a parachutist in the sky on the right
Several pro-life groups marched.
We saw a lot of classic and unusual cars! I proudly showed the guys in the Raider truck my 49er hat!
Pictures of the floats in my next post.
