This Week in the Psalms #5 (106-120)

God always perfectly keeps his covenant promises, even though his people consistently fail him. Despite "exile" now he will bring his people into his glorious kingdom. Psalm 106

bibleScroll-300x183Kingdom blessing can be experienced in the present when we fulfill our covenant obligations to do righteousness (love God) and justice (love others as God loves us). Ps. 106.3-4

We have a tendency to rebel against God, forget his goodness to us, reject his chosen leaders and worship things that lower our human dignity as God's image. Ps 106.16,20,21,32,37

The basis of a wise worldview is the truth that God is good and his covenant promises are reliable. When we are in trouble we can call on the Lord and trust that he will hear and deliver. Psalm 107

God's power and promise are our hope, not our own skill, or power. Only God's plan will ultimately be successful and we participate in that only with his help. Psalm 108

When you receive evil from people to whom you have done good, do not take revenge (Don't respond to evil with evil). Pray and leave their judgment to God. He will vindicate you as you trust him. Psalm 109

YHWH will place his Messiah as priest-king of the world. He will judge with justice, destroy the oppressors, bless his people in all the nations, and Messiah's faithful companions will share in his rule. Psalm 110

Public praise of God in both words and obedient actions is the foundation of a wise lifestyle because God has shown himself worthy through his wise words and faithful actions, and he sustains them for all eternity. Psalm 111

The people who place God and his covenant as the center of their life are rightly related to God and everyone (and everything) around them. God meets all their needs so that they can be generous with others and are at peace when things seem to be going wrong. This confuses and frustrates the wicked to no end. Psalm 112

God deserves to be praised at all times by all peoples because his power and character are far above ours and he uses that power to raise up the outcast and poor of his people (an example we should follow). Psalm 113

The events of the Exodus show that when God decides to redeem and bless his people there is no barrier that can stop him. Psalm 114

We become like the gods we worship. If we worship empty, inadequate gods we become empty and fail to be what we were created to be. If we worship the true God we receive help and blessing and are in relationship with him forever. Psalm 115

Sometimes we have a wrong idea about God based on current circumstances. After he acts we see that we were wrong and he was there, blessing us, all the time. We need to remember this and praise him even when our circumstances are bad. Psalm 116

Everyone should honor God because his covenant promises are sure and eternal. Psalm 117

Jesus (Jesus is God's ultimate expression of the principle in v.22) shows that God's covenant promises are eternally valid, that God is our only solid basis of trust, that we don't need to fear and, thus, we should rejoice, worship and praise him. Psalm 118
