The PIU graduation festivities began last night with the baccalaureate service at Faith Presbyterian Church. The baccalaureate at PIU is a student led service, with a speaker chosen by the students for the students, the PIU staff and faculty and the families of the students. The graduates did a great job again this year and I think everyone who came was blessed. Joyce and I did take some pictures and here they are….
Davy Welle and the graduating class organized and MC’d the event and the chapel worship team Mike, Kevin and Jesse (you can see Jesse’s legs behind the drums) led the music
Each of the other graduates handled a portion of the MC Duties. Daisy Murdock (left) was our salutatorian and gave her address.
Student Life Director Rob Watt delivered the keynote address. His point was that there are things we need to “kill” in our lives and things we need to “keep.”
The student body (who had not yet gone back to their islands after the semester ended on Friday) honored the graduates with two songs that had the audience clapping and smiling
Our provost Christel Wood presented English teacher and Liberal Studies Chair, Sarah Brubaker, with the “Teacher of the Year” award as voted by the students.
Last year’s teacher of the year, Mike Owen presents Kita Mokut with the “student of the year” award as voted by the PIU faculty. On the left, I get to have my picture taken with the 2103 Student of the Year!
Steve Bradley led us all in a commissioning prayer for the graduates.
PIU events are a fun time for the Owen family.
