This morning we held our annual Financial aid assembly during our normal chapel time to talk to the students about financial aid available to them and distribute our new Guide to Financial Aid Manuals. All of our students were required to attend so that we could explain to them how our student finances, scholarship programs and other financial aid would be set up. I began by talking with the students about PIU’s commitment to make Christian higher education financially accessible to all of our students and that we remain committed to having students graduate without loan debt. We are thankful for so many missionary and volunteer staff who help keep costs down, but we need to continue looking for operational and scholarship support for PIU and for our students.
After our Student Life VP Rob Watt opened with prayer, Nino Pate explained the way the President’s Grant and the new Work Education scholarship would be set up. Most of our students put in up to 80 hours of volunteer work on campus each semester to help keep costs down. This also give our students practical work experience that will make them more qualified for post-graduation employment.
Nico Daams from the Isles of the Sea group explained the new Bible Translation minor in our Biblical Studies program which will prepare our graduates to translate the Bible into their own language and assist other island groups to get a Bible in their own language. This program is done in cooperation with Wycliffe and we are working together to fund a scholarship for students in this program.
